About Gumbies

Gumbies was born from a love of the outdoors, a spirit of adventure, and the belief that life is better when it's kept simple.
Our founder, Michel Maurer, has always been driven by curiosity, creativity and a desire to explore. As a teenager, he emigrated with his family to Australia, where he first discovered the Aboriginal tradition of Walkabout—a journey of exploration, freedom and connection with nature. Those values would go on to shape not only his outlook on life, but the future of Gumbies.
Growing up, Michel was never one to sit still. Whether it was building things in his father's garage or dreaming of his next adventure, he was always searching for a different path. That same entrepreneurial spirit eventually took him around the world, working and travelling while gathering inspiration from the people, places and landscapes he encountered.
During a trade exhibition in Salt Lake City, USA, Michel came across the story of legendary British bootmaker John Lobb. His dedication to craftsmanship, innovation and perseverance sparked an idea: to create a footwear brand inspired by adventure, built on quality, and designed for everyday life.
The Quest for the Perfect Thong
The journey began with a simple question:
Could a thong be more comfortable, more durable and more sustainable?
Michel set out to design footwear that reflected everything he valued—comfort, simplicity, functionality and respect for the environment.
Early prototypes were even made using old tyres before evolving into the signature construction Gumbies is known for today. By combining recycled rubber, natural jute fibres, soft EVA cushioning and breathable canvas footbeds, Gumbies created a flip-flop that looked different, felt different and performed differently.
The result was the original Islander—a thong inspired by adventure and built for wherever life takes you.
Designed for Adventure
Today, Gumbies has grown far beyond a single thong.
